The COVID-19 outbreak created an undeniable amount of concern regarding hygiene, to the point grocery stores and pharmacies have run out of potent cleaning products and hand sanitizer.

Being conscious of personal hygiene by constantly washing hands, wearing masks and staying at home play a big part in preventing the spread of the disease.

However, public places still aren’t safe even if everyone does their part.

To combat the spread of the virus, Humber College is conducting specialized COVID-19 cleaning behind closed doors, so that students can come back to a worry-free environment.

“We have kept the entire cleaning staff working after the college closed the doors, so we have lots of labor available for the heavy-duty cleaning,” said Spencer Wood, director of Facilities Management at Humber College.

Wood said the heavy-duty cleaning involves wiping down all surfaces with a chemical known to kill the virus, carpet cleaning, dusting and window washing.

“We are working our way through the college in a systematic fashion. We are using our electrostatic fogging machines in the areas of the college where there are still people around, like the Student Residence,” he said.

Humber is also taking precautionary measures to protect its staff during the cleaning process.

“The cleaners themselves are being screened by the cleaning contractor for symptoms, have paid sick leave, are wearing protective equipment as appropriate, and have been very well trained,” Wood said.

Liena Najibi, director of Sales and Marketing from Affinity Integrated Solutions, a company that offers commercial cleaning services, said a special disinfectant is used to wipe out the COVID-19 virus.

“Workers are equipped with additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as an extra added precaution and measure, and are now using Virox disinfectant, a hospital-grade disinfectant, to ensure the full commitment we have for our clients to help protect and keep them safe from the virus,” she said.

Najid said the disinfectant produced by Virox Technologies kills all germs and viruses within five minutes of application, which makes it an essential tool for their Special Sanitization Program to help fight the virus.

The disinfectant is one of the disinfectant products that meet Health Canada’s requirements for combating emerging viruses, according to the federal government.

Virox, an Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide, and other authorized disinfectants, can be used against SARS-CoV-2, the strain of coronavirus that causes COVID-19.
