Humber’s Ramnish Kumar was named the Athlete of the Week on March 9 for his outstanding performance on the badminton court.
Kumar, from Panjokhara, a small town in the northern Indian state of Haryana, smashed his way through the three-day 2020 CCAA Badminton National Championships finals but lost to his OCAA rival Pranav Satheesh in a 50-minute nail-biter.
The intense match between Kumar and Satheesh went into the third-set before the Conestoga challenger took home the gold with a 22-20 round.
“I was mad and disappointed,” Kumar said.
“I had the lead and he made a comeback but at the same time I am proud to have come this far.,” he said.
“Words cannot express how I feel about my achievements.”
Kumar became the first Hawk in history to record back-to-back CCAA medals in the men’s badminton singles category.
“With dedication and hard work everything is possible,” he said.
Now in his final year of the Fitness and Health Promotion program at Humber, Kumar plans to return to the Hawk’s centre court after he graduates. Kumar has applied to the Bachelors of Kinesiology program at the University of Guelph-Humber.
Fellow badminton teammate Arpit Taneja praised Kumar’s game.
“He went farther than all of us and I’m excited seeing him being successful,” Taneja said.
The Humber 2020 OCAA League All-Star Desmond Chan said he’s happy Kumar won the silver for Humber.
“He’s a good player on and off the court and he always pushes himself to the end,” Chan said.
