Learn about the risks of substance use at Sober Social

Monday, November 18, 2024 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Humber Polytechnic’s public relations certificate (PRC) program, in collaboration with the Student Wellness & Accessibility Centre (SWAC), will host Sober Social on Monday, Nov. 18, 2024.

This interactive workshop invites Humber students to learn about harm reduction related to substance use. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the real-world implications of using substances. The purpose of Sober Social is to offer healthier alternatives and raise awareness about on-campus support resources.

Substance use is an overlooked issue at universities and colleges. Almost 10 per cent of Humber students are at moderate risks for substance abuse, according to SWAC. One in three Humber students consume substances like alcoholic beverages and cannabis.

Understanding the risks of substance use can help students make informed choices, said SWAC Manager of Wellness Education and Programs, Bindia Darshan. “Sober social is an opportunity for students to engage in conversations about alcohol use and to reflect on making choices that align with their own values.”

Sober Social will feature interactive activities, including mocktail-making workshops, situational role-playing sessions and trivia booths that showcase the myths vs. realities of substance use.
