Roll Players bring D&D to life

The Roll Players bring Dungeons and Dragons to life by giving it a twist of comedy and live improvisation.

Toronto now has its own live Dungeons and Dragons (D&D), and it is a hybrid of the game and live improvisational comedy.

The show was organized at Comedy Bar at 2800 Danforth Ave, Toronto, and will repeat throughout the year the last Tuesday of each month at 8:30 p.m.

D&D is a table top roleplaying fantasy game in which players create and control characters who carry out a series of adventures. The game also allows players to create groups, solve mysteries, and engage in battles. Each player can select a class and race which gives them special powers that they use to progress in the game.

The game runs on a point form where the players get points each time they win a battle or solve a mystery.

The live version in Toronto was played by seven players who are actually a part of a comedy club called Roll Players.

Kris Siddiqi was the producer of the show and also took on the role of dungeon master, the person who controls the world the players are in.

Each player depicted their character verbally to give an impression of them being there in the real world. Siddiqi being the master of this game had the right to decide the outcome of each player's move and how their moves will impact the non-player characters.

The Roll Players played the D&D campaign, Lost Mine of Phandelver and each month will level up.

The game was played between two parties- non-player characters, controlled by Siddiqi, and player characters with both sides trying to solve the mysteries before the other team does.

Each show of the game will go on for 120 minutes with no intermissions. Siddiqi will narrate the scene to set it up and then describe the nature of the non-player characters.

Siddiqi gave a new description each time when a fresh non-player character was introduced, and each player character would verbally describe how they were attacking the other side.

The team of non-player characters were played by Aurora Browne, Lisa Merchant, and Paul Bates who will play a new character each month during a new level of the game.

The player characters were played by Sarah Hillier as Bard, Sharjil Rasool who was Wizard, and Andy Hull who played the role of Barbarian.

Hull is also the show's producer along with being a player character in the game.

The first level of the game was won by the player characters as they defeated the team of three goblins who ambushed their caravan.

Their next show is on Feb. 25, 2025. The tickets for future shows can be found on their website.
