The Humber Hawks women’s basketball team ended its regular season strong by dominating the Sheridan Bruins in a 91-58 rout, proving they are a force heading into the playoffs.
Their victory secured a 14-2 record, setting them up for their first playoff matchup against George Brown College on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 6 p.m.
Humber’s aggressive play overwhelmed Sheridan from the start. Their relentless offence and disciplined defence kept the Bruins from gaining momentum, leaving them unable to respond effectively throughout the game.
The Hawks capitalized on turnovers and executed their game plan with precision. Their dominant performance reaffirmed why they are among the toughest teams in the league.
The game was particularly significant as it was also Senior Night, honouring shooting guard Kia Watt, and guards Maezell Del Mundo, and Sarah Baptie in their final home regular season game.
The three seniors delivered standout performances. Watt recorded 17 points, seven rebounds, and one assist. Del Mundo added 14 points, two rebounds, and two assists. Baptie contributed 10 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
Coach Ceejay Nofuente reflected on coaching the seniors, calling it an honour. She praised their dedication and leadership, highlighting their contributions to the team’s success.
“These girls showed out like seniors and brought their team to victory,” Nofuente said. “I was fortunate enough to coach them throughout their careers.”
Looking ahead, Nofuente stressed the importance of teamwork and unity. She said winning in the playoffs would require everyone to play their role and give maximum effort.
“We must bring everything to the table,” she said. “It’s a team effort, we’re going to win as a team, not as individuals.”
Watt reflected on her five years with Humber. She spoke about the team’s bond and the meaningful experiences she shared with her teammates.
“Playing for Humber has been an unforgettable journey,” she said. “This team is family. We’ve battled together and supported each other through everything.”
Watt said she valued the relationships she built with her teammates. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to grow as both a player and a person.
“We’ve grown together, and I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything,” she said. “I’m grateful for my coaches and teammates for making these years special.”
They remain determined as the Hawks prepare for the playoffs. Their focus, chemistry, and discipline will be crucial as they aim to make a deep postseason run.
