Liberals appear to be on their way to recovering two key ridings that seemed lost.
Toronto-Centre and LaSalle-Émard-Verdun ridings were lost in 2024 byelections. In Toronto, the Conservative Party of Canada candidate won, taking from the Liberals, while in Quebec, the Bloc Québécois gained the seat.
The two defeats were seen as voters sending a message to then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Toronto-Centre has elected Liberal MPs since 1993, when Bill Graham gained the electorate's trust and stayed in office for more than 20 years.
LaSalle-Émard-Verdun tells a much different story. It was a new riding created in 2013 and first contested in 2015. It was a Liberal seat until 2024, when it lost to Bloc Québécois.
Now, with the polls closing in, the Liberals appear to have reclaimed these lost ridings.
By 9:50 p.m., LaSalle-Émard-Verdun had the Liberals leading with 61 per cent of the votes in for Claude Guay.
By 10:46 p.m., Claude Guay was declared the winner with 53 per cent of the votes. Bloc Québécois was a close second with 22 per cent of the votes for Louis-Philippe Sauvé.
Toronto-Centre results didn’t come in until 10:29 p.m., with the Liberals leading the riding with 61.8 per cent of the votes for Evan Solomon. The Conservatives were trailing with 22.9 per cent of the votes for Luis Ibarra.
